"Night Fever," by Bee Gees

Oh. my. Gosh. I LOVE this song! This week I landed on one of my favorite dancy-dancy songs, “Night Fever,” by Bee Gees! I’ve heard other songs we’ve listened to before, but this is one of the first songs that I already knew the lyrics to before coming to class. The strong beat and funky sounds just make me feel something no other songs do. My favorite time to listen to this song is on a playlist with others like it when I’m renovating or doing chores. Bee Gees make any work go by faster.       The first lyrics in the song go, “Listen to the ground, There is movement all around, There is something goin’ down, And I can feel it.” Just listening to this song makes me feel so happy and makes me want to dance. The lyrics go perfectly with the song and they know just how they make you feel. I can imagine people back in the seventies with their fancy hair and clothes jamming out to this song. It is songs like this that make me wish I was born back then! ...

"You Can't Hurry Love," by The Supremes

Ahhh!! I’m so excited that we are finally getting into the good songs. Not that the ones before weren’t good, but no offense to Jean Ritchie , my ears have had better days after “Barbary Allen.” This week’s song is “You Can’t Hurry Love,” by The Supremes. I think this is such a cute song! Listening to this song makes me tap my feet without even realizing! Now that we are getting more into a time of overlapping music, there are so many more layers in each song. I love listening to one specific part of the song every time I listen, like the bass, then the tambourine, and the background voices. So good!      I also really like the words for this song. I feel like the music and the words fit so well together, and the voices singing are perfect. This is the type of song that will play during a movie and in a way it reminds me of the movie Grease . I could see little ole’ Sandy listening to this song in her room. I really like the vibes I get from this song ...

"La Bamba," by Ritchie Valens

The song I chose to write about today actually makes me so happy. I chose “La Bamba” by Ritchie Valens because it reminds me of childhood memories with my dad. My dad went on an LDS mission to Portugal and he became very good at speaking Portuguese. Then, he started working construction where he switched from Portuguese being his second language to Spanish. He worked with many others, most of them being Mexicans. Since the music was always up to them, my dad brought back a lot of Mexican songs for us to listen to. This song makes me want to get up and dance, and it always makes me think of my dad.      I love the addition of claves in this song because they really help emphasize the beat. One of my favorite parts however is when all the parts pause for a moment before returning to the chorus. It adds a nice breath and I feel it just adds to the song in general. I also love the many different guitars played in this one song! It all makes for the perfect...

“I’m so Lonesome I Could Cry,” by Hank Williams

I decided to switch things up this week and go with a slower, a bit sadder song. Hank William’s “I’m so Lonesome I Could Cry” embodies what I feel a lot of us can say we’ve felt before. This isn’t the typical song I would add to my sad playlists, but I could see myself listening to this song and crying. Especially when it’s one of those nights where you’re overwhelmed and underslept (sleep deprivation does something to a person). The gentle guitar and slow beat gives the perfect midnight kind of vibe. What would make this song even better would be to listen with headphones and rain sounds.       I really like the lyrics to this song. Hank personifies exactly what it feels like when you’re all alone, in the middle of the night, left with your thoughts. There’s times where all I want to do is cry too. One of the lyrics that particularly caught my eye was when he said, “I’ve never seen a night so long, When time goes crawling by.” There is nothing wo...

"Blue Yodel No. 2," by Jimmie Rodgers

To kick off this week, I decided to review Jimmie Rodger’s “Blue Yodel No. 2.” Country music is one of my favorite genres, so I am super glad that we are being introduced to it now. Not that I would listen to yodel necessarily by my own free will, but I do love it occasionally. I think it is pretty fancy how smooth his voice can change notes like that. It reminds me of the Walmart yodel boy from a few years ago. Jimmie walked so he could run. To me, it is crazy how the butterfly effect works. To think this is where country music started, with Jimmie as the “father of country,” and how far it is now. I also love the music for this song. It is him and his guitar, and I love that. This song gives me driving through the mountains vibes. When I was younger, my family would always listen to country on road trips. We would listen to groups like Rascal Flatts, or singers such as Tim McGraw. I love listening to songs by Jimmie Rodgers and comparing them to country songs we have nowadays. Especi...
