"I Got Rhythm," by George/Ira Gershwin
For my song of the week, I decided to go with an upbeat, feel good song. For this, I’d have no choice but to go with “I Got Rhythm” written by George and Ira Gershwin, performed by Ethel Merman. This song gives major flapper vibes, and I love it. With the snappy jazz and catchy beat, it’s an easy song to dance to. Listening to this song makes me feel like I’m up on stage myself performing. Along with the jazzy music, Ethel has the perfect voice for this song. It has just the right amount of sass and attitude for the lyrics.
Speaking of, I LOVE the lyrics for this song! This song has a very happy and optimistic feel. Nature is beautiful, we don’t need money to make us happy! I always joke that there’s music 24/7 in my head and I’m always dancing to it. Ethel sings that as long as you’ve got rhythm, you don’t need anything else. As I was listening to this song, I couldn’t help but tap my feet and be in a better mood. Personally, I feel like the lyrics are relatable to me and along with the jazz, it makes for the perfect song.
I’ll be honest, I love this song. I totally agree that it is very upbeat, catchy, and it definitely gives me flapper vibes as well. It actually makes me think of the Broadway show “Thoroughly Modern Millie”. Especially how big of a personality Ethel has during the song, it’s just like the main character Millie. It’s also really great that this song had a positive effect on you, those are the best kind of songs.
ReplyDeleteI loved your analysis! I have to agree this song definitely had me dancing while listening to it. I also have music in my head pretty much constantly and I found this one staying in my head for a lot longer than some of the other options we had this week.
ReplyDeleteI also liked this song because of how upbeat it is. It has a good beat that makes it so you could almost listen to it on repeat. It is something that definitely fits the era because of the bright rhythm and beat as well as the clear jazz aspects of the song.
ReplyDeleteThis was a wonderful song, I love how much character she puts into her voice. It's so rare to see that in many forms of music throughout history. I didn't have the thought of flapper vibes until you brought it up, I definitely can see that. I personally do not like how much vibrato she uses, I find it almost kind of flashy and annoying. She is so talented nonetheless, vibrato isn't an easy task. Great analysis!
