"Taylor, Adele, & Silk Sonic's broken hearts club" Switched on Pop
I decided to go for some extra credit and reflect on some Switched on Pop. An episode from last week titled Taylor, Adele, & Silk Sonic’s broken hearts club. I found myself enjoying it more than I thought I would. This episode is narrated by musicologist Nate Sloan, songwriter Charlie Harding, and guest Brittany Luse. The first sentence in the description literally says, “This week we are having a blast feeling really sad.” and honestly? Same. Finals are going to literally kill me. This drew me into to episode and got me interested.
This episode starts off with an ad. As usual. Besides that, we get to kick off with some Taylor Swift. The main focus on her was her recently rerecorded and released album Red. Brittany explains that she listened up on Taylor before they recorded and she had some interesting notes. While speaking on the song “All Too Well (Taylor’s Version),” she describes Taylor’s music throughout the years and how her older music feels almost childish. She feels as if the music was a child complaining about child problems, but her rerecorded music feels more mature and reminiscent. Taylor’s ability to express emotion through her music is powerful and can be felt by listeners around the world.
The podcast carries on by listening to different songs and speaking on the different types of heartbreak attached to each song. While Taylor’s seemed reminiscent of her child heartbreak, Summer Walker’s “Throw it Away” is almost like she is talking to and reassuring herself. Silk Sonic’s “Put On a Smile” is about life after a heartbreak, and becoming better (not really.) One of my favorites they talked about was Kacey Musgraves’s “Justified.” I think it might be my new favorite song right now. This song is about healing after a heartbreak, and how it’s okay to feel so many emotions at once; it is justified. She shows such control over her voice and plays a minimalist tone in her song.
